Me talking about being free to write the story you’ve been given

It’s taken me nearly two years to finish the book I was contracted to write over three years ago.

Through December I busted my tale to finish so that we could get the book out in August. And it about killed me. With a few thousand words still left to write, I called up a friend of mine in tears. “I have nothing left in me. I have given all of me to this book and the thought of pushing out a few thousand more words seems impossible. I don’t know what to do.”

And my friend said to me, “Well, can you just leave it as it is?”

The thought that the book could be complete without meeting a specific word requirement was something I didn’t think of. I mean, books are supposed to be a certain length, and if you don’t have the length, you just make and stretch words until you’ve met the quota. But I didn’t want to just add words, I wanted to share the message I had without forcing more into it. So this is the reality of publishing. And there is nothing wrong with it, if you have the integrity to write in-depth on a topic. Some messages are 20,000 words and some are 70,000. The message you have is what it is, no less, no more.

How do you know if you’re writing from a place of integrity? You write from your own well.

As I sat holding the phone to my ear, my friend on the other line prayed for me. And then she said something profound. She said, “Sarah, if I go pick up a book from so and so, and it is Holy Spirit led (he was compelled to write it), it brings relief to my soul. If so and so writes another book because now he has fame or a deadline or for any other reason than that he has a message from his well, the book won’t bring relief; it will leave me parched.”

I don’t ever want to leave my readers parched. I want to bring them relief so that they can keep on in this life.

We must write from our own well (tweet that), from the story we’ve been given, from the message we are compelled to share.

This is one of the lessons I’ve learned as a writer, and it is this lesson that I will cling to as I move forward as a creator.

If you are a creator, and you have a message, a story, to share that you are compelled to share, then it will bring relief to someone who needs to hear it. And you must tell it, because it is in your soul to do so.

For all of you out there who are reading this and thinking, “Yes, that’s me. I have a story and I want to share it!” Then I have a resource for you.

In December I had the honor of being a part of creating a course called, Author Launch. It is a course for those of you who want to tell your story through writing a book. Before I tell you more about it, take a look at a sample video from the course:

The beautiful thing about this course is that you have 10 experienced writers walking alongside you for 46 weeks as you write your book.

Each of these authors has something to offer you that will help you immeasurably. For example, Crystal Paine’s marketing advice is out of the this world. She is absolutely BRILLIANT when it comes to understanding the techniques for getting your story to the world (her marketing knowledge is mind-blowing, and it alone is worth hundreds of dollars). Then of course you have self-published writers like Josh Becker who has sold over 60,000 of his book and is now being published traditionally, Donald Miller who is a veteran writer with massive experience and talent, and Jeff Goins who grew his blog to over 100,000 readers in under two years. You guys, these people know their stuff, and they are walking with you through this course.

Crystal Paine on Marketing

The course is filled with this kind of practical knowledge.

Now that you’ve seen some sample videos, let’s get more specific.

Why Author Launch?

Here is how myself and the other writers are going to help you during the 46 weeks:

  • We will take you step-by-step in writing your book. By the end of 46 weeks you will have a completed book (if you’ve done the work!).
  • You will receive weekly emails with detailed help and practical steps for each stage of the book writing process. These emails will come with videos from all of us authors.
  • A nearly 50,000 word PDF book to guide you during the course.
  • We will help you to not only write your book, but get it ready for the publishing process.
  • We will teach you how to get the word out about your book so your message can get to as many people as possible.

If you were to hire just one of these writers for consulting, if would cost you between $300 and $1000. If you were to sign up for a college or business school course on writing and marketing, you’d be paying hundreds of dollars, and you still wouldn’t have access to all of these amazing writers.

Friends, I 100% endorse this course. It is just done so well. It is a phenomenal resource that I wish I would have had when I was starting out, especially because I could have really used the accountability, encouragement, expertise, and step-by-step help to work consistently on my book.

If you’d like to join me and 9 other writers as you get that message in your soul to the world, just click HERE. REGISTRATION CLOSES ON JANUARY 31ST! MONDAY (February 2nd) at 11:59 pm EST! We begin together on February 2nd.

I can’t wait to hear your story.

Oh, and by the way, I am so pleased with the book I was able to write. In fact, I’m giddy over it. It is a message from my own well and I cannot wait to share it with you all. 🙂

Love, SM

P.S. Isn’t my makeup lovely? My talented make-up artist sister did it! If you’re around the Nashville area and you’re looking for someone to beautify you, check her out HERE!

I’m in! This came along at just the right time. Thanks! 🙂

  • http://www.The-How-to-Guru.com/ The How-to Guru

How wonderful! God has been pushing me to write my story for a very long time. To do so will bring pain that I’ve hidden away and to dig deep into that is overwhelming {you know all about that, I know}, but I’m certain it will bring healing from my heavenly Father as well. Thank you Sarah.

  • Brandy

God works in such fun, interesting ways. It has been on my heart to share my ugly, embarrassing, wretched story for some time now. It’s a beautiful romance, really. Because I fell in love with Jesus and was given victorious freedom because of Him!

I have two questions: when I click on “sign up through me” it takes me to the registration page, is there a code I need to enter to get the one-on-one time with you?

And also, if I sign up for the monthly fee, is there a contract or is it month-to-month?

Thanks in advance. Have a blessed day!

    • http://www.likeawarmcupofcoffee.com Sarah Mae

Brandy, GREAT QUESTION!!!!! Come back here and leave a comment once you’ve signed up and I’ll connect with you. 🙂 As for the monthly plan, this is what the FAQ section says, “You can either pay a one-time membership fee (includes a slight discount), or you can pay in monthly installments of $42. The great news is, once you’re a member, you’re in, free to go at your own pace and revisit old content whenever you feel like it–whether in a couple weeks or next year.” Is that helpful? If you still have questions, email hello (at) authorlaunch (dot) com.

  • Jennifer Kochert

This sounds wonderful and very timely. I am praying if this is the right season to begin this project of writing the book that is on my heart and discern if realistically I can commit to this. Will you pray for me as well. I would love to do this, just want to make sure its a GOD idea for me right now not just a good idea 😉

    • Jennifer Kochert

I will be signing up on Friday! Looking forward to it!

  • colleen_evelyn

I finished my first non-fiction manuscript a few months ago and am in the process of editing — as well as wading through the vast array of self-publishing options. I love what you are offering, but am wondering if it would be useful if the book is already completed. I feel like there is so much I don’t know about the process of publishing and marketing, but I am not sure I need the whole 46 weeks. As far as the content of the course goes, would you still feel that it would be worth it?

    • http://www.likeawarmcupofcoffee.com Sarah Mae

I don’t think so only because SO much is on the writing process. There is some incredible marketing advice, but for the cost I’m not sure it would be worth it. On the other hand, the marketing info is pretty stellar. Google author launch vimeo and watch some sample vids and then decide. If you do decide, come back here to register so you get the one on one coaching! 🙂

      • colleen_evelyn

Thank you for your honest answer. I don’t think I will be signing up, but it’s a great idea! Wish that one-on-one coaching was available without the course! 🙂

Yesterday I listened to Craig Groeshel speak about faith…faith to do big things, amazing things for God. He said, you may want to write a book, and maybe no one will read it, but that doesn’t matter…do you have the faith to write it?!? And I felt like he was talking to me through my iPad;) and this morning I see this…and my spirit jumps a little. And this scares me…but like most things I my life I do them safer because they are worth doing. So…I’m in after it discuss it with my husband 😉 how will is homeschool and blog and write and do laundry I don’t know, but I know that god is stretching me and when you are stretchy you tend to bounce back some! I’m excited! Thank Sarah. Do we have to go to a specific place to register under you?

    • http://www.likeawarmcupofcoffee.com Sarah Mae

That is such encouraging advice!! You can register here: http://www.authorlaunch.com/Sarah 🙂

      • http://www.beautifulcraziness.blogspot.com/ andrea

Quick question – Do we have to get the gold package to get the one on one coaching? Or does that come however we purchase?

        • http://www.beautifulcraziness.blogspot.com/ andrea

Sarah I just registered! This is crazy and scary! Thank you.

      • Paushali

Just joined! So excited about this. For the support

  • Brian

Hi Sarah. I’m considering signing up for this, but I am curious about something. Most, if not all of the writers associated with this projects (at least as far as I can tell) are non-fiction writers. Is this course specifically designed for the non-fiction writer, or can/should novelists participate as well?

    • Brian

Whoops, I mean “projects,” not “projects.” 🙂

      • Brian

        Ugh. “Project,” not “projects.” Sorry!

        • http://www.likeawarmcupofcoffee.com Sarah Mae

Haha! So funny. That is a great question, and I don’t see why not. You are the one who will be generating the idea and the outline and all of it. So I think it would be helpful. 🙂

  • Cara Thompson

I don’t know if this is the best timing for me, and I’m wondering if this Author Launch will be offered again next year?
I have my writing goals already in place for this year, and I don’t like to feel compelled by a “one time offer” deal.
I feel like this is a great resource, and I would definitely benefit from it. And I already have – the audio book is free right now on NoiseTrade.

Do you know if this is a “once in a lifetime” thing? Or will this come back around next year?

    • http://www.likeawarmcupofcoffee.com Sarah Mae

I am honestly not sure. You can email hello@authorlaunch.com and they’ll help! 🙂 My guess is that they will offer it again at a later date.

      • Cara Thompson

Thanks Sarah Mae! I hope this opportunity is a blessing to many!

  • JustMeSeason .

Aw man! I wish I would have known about this earlier!! I am almost finished with my memoir and I know it probably doesn’t make sense to anyone but me. Bummer.

  • http://madesacred.com/ Elizabeth Giger

Would the course still be helpful for someone like me who has recently finished that very sort of book, but doesn’t quite know what to do with it?

    • http://www.likeawarmcupofcoffee.com Sarah Mae

I’m not sure. It is packed with publishing and marketing info, but the bulk is helping you write a book step-by-step. I mean, the coaching and marketing advice in my opinion is worth the cost alone, but you have to decide that. 🙂

  • http://www.about.me/annaradchenko Anna Radchenko

I would love to do something like this, but I don’t know if I’m ready to write a book. I definitely have already dreamed of it, plus numerous ideas, and most recently one daunting idea from my life’s experience… but I just don’t know if I could do it and have the words mean something.

Do I have to have a blog or a following to do this? I know that’s part of the publishing aspect, but it’s not something I can see myself doing. I hate trying to gain a “following”

    • http://www.likeawarmcupofcoffee.com Sarah Mae

No, you do not need a blog! 🙂 As far as writing a book, I think if you have something to say and/or a story to tell, then it could be a good investment. 🙂

  • Chelsea

I just signed up through you! 🙂 I hope I used the right link when I did…Is there a way I can check to make sure I got signed up through you? I’m not sure I did it right…

Eeeee! Can’t wait though! Let the writing begin! 🙂

  • http://MandyJHoffman.com/ Mandy J. Hoffman

Wow. I really, really, want to sign-up for this, but I can’t afford it at the moment. I’m currently getting ready to launch my first book as it is and finish paying for the work it took to get it ready. Will this be open again at any time?

    • http://www.likeawarmcupofcoffee.com Sarah Mae

Hi Mandy, 🙂 Yes, I believe it will be open again at a future date. To be sure, you can always ask by sending an email to hello@authorlaunch.com. 🙂

  • Jen

  • Carrie Crawford

I’m signed up! Pumped and ready to do this!

  • Cara Thompson

I just pulled the trigger! My reason for waiting was fear wearing nice masks! I can’t wait Sarah, and I look forward to the one-on-one! (Also, sorry for the HUGE picture of me in my other comment. How in the world?)

  • http://altarofheaven.wordpress.com/ arcelia

Talk about waiting to the last minute!!! I just signed up!!! I’m excited, thankful, overwhelmed and I want to throw up and cry at the same time!

My husband has encouraged me to share and write a book, and I’ve only dipped my toe in by blogging. I’ve been talking about writing a book for two years I have much in my heart and feel like it’s stuck and it can’t get out. I don’t even know how to prioritize what should I write first!! I am mess but at least now I have a team to cheer me on! Thank you Sarah Mae for being a wise steward of what God has entrusted you by investing and exhorting and encouraging others.

    Here we go….

    Ephesians 2:10

  • http://www.NoLongerAshes.com Jenni Hunt

I barely made it in… have had incredible technical issues this weekend that almost kept me away. 😉
And – the first thing I noticed was your beautiful makeup Sarah Mae… gorgeous even without it. Can’t wait to get started… I’ve been sitting on my book for well over a year – I think it’s time.

  • Jo @ To a Pretty Life

So sad I missed this! By one day even 😉 I really hope they offer it again.
