Thanksgiving Traditions & Recipes Plus Black Friday Sales

thanks

This was me in ’09, all preggers, making my first Thanksgiving turkey. This year I will make my second.

Happy almost-Thanksgiving!

This morning I asked my friends on Facebook if they’d share with me their favorite Thanksgiving traditions and recipes (I have yet to have a Thanksgiving tradition, so this year I’m going to steal from you all!). You can read all the responses here. My two favorites are these…

From Meghan Fravel:

We hand out gallon Ziploc bags to the homeless full of essentials. Since Justin traveled A LOT this whole year he literally filled up a small Backpack full of hotel shampoo’s conditioners, soaps etc and we added that to the bag plus toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, granola bars, small bottle of water, bible track and a pair of socks or gloves. We go to a neighborhood that has a lot of homeless men, women and kids and give them bags and usually bring some of our thanksgiving food to them as well.

From Krystle Bowen:

We decorate a tree on the side of the freeway with Christmas decorations! A little Christmas cheer for those travelers and especially truckers!

And here are three recipes, one from my family, and two from my readers…

Sweet Potato Casserole, a dish I make every year:

Ingredients: 2 large cans of yams, 1 c. sugar, 2 tsp. vanilla, 2 eggs, 1/2 stick of butter, 1 tsp. salt, 1/2 c. sweetened condensed milk. Topping: 1 c. brown sugar, 1/2 stick butter, 1/2 c. four, 1 c. pecans.

Directions: Mash sweet yams well. Stir together filling ingredients and yams and put in buttered 8 x 8 pan. Stir topping together and put on top of potato mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until bubbly.

Fancy Potatoes (Submitted by Meghan Fravel):

Make regular mashed potatoes but add 16 oz of cream cheese and 1 cup of sour cream. Mix it all together, put it in a baking dish, top with cheddar cheese, and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. YUMM!

More Than Candy – A 25-Day Christmas Countdown that Counts eBook Re-releases Monday!

Available Monday, November 4th!

“‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” Matthew 25:40

Well hi. It’s been awhile, hasn’t it? I’ve missed you. But I have been busy writing and co-hosting and enjoying my favorite time of year.

However.

I thought you might like to know that my eBook More Than Candy – A 25-Day Christmas Countdown that Counts will be re-releasing on Monday (with a spiffy new cover to boot thanks to this man!). Happy dancing!

A bit about the eBook:

If you’re looking for more than a candy countdown this Christmas, you might like More Than Candy. It’s 25 days of things to do with your family that matter to your neighbors, your local community, your family, and those in need.

I began creating Christmas countdowns years ago after being exposed to them during college. Every year our church would hand out an advent calendar that had scriptures and actionable steps to take to make a difference in the community and in our own hearts. I loved it and I ended up continuing the tradition when I moved away from that church.

What you will find in More Than Candy is our family’s Christmas countdown (it is not an advent devotional). I start with an overview of the days, and I then add more detail and/or ideas to accompany each day’s opportunity.

This year, don’t just let the days go by in a flurry, missing an opportunity to serve. Make the days count. I’ll be counting right along with you.

“But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.”

-1 John 3:17-18 (NASB)

You will be able to purchase the eBook for $4.99 as a PDF or on Kindle, or you can get it for free. :)  The Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle goes on sale on Monday as well, and if you purchase a copy from me, you can get More Than Candy, plus my other eBooks for FREE. For details, head here.

Love, SM

P.S. The first 100 people to purchase More Than Candy (or the Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle through me) will get this Redeemed Christmas Countdown Chalkboard for FREE!

God with me, God with us, God with them, God with the wicked and twisted and vile

From one of my favorite authors, John Lynch:

“Stunning. He was given a name to explain exactly where He is during my deepest need.

He is Immanuel-“God is with us”

He is not a concept, a theory or a theology. He is not a system or a religion. He is not an icon, a figurehead, or a mythical movement leader. He is not an allegory. He is not an ideal. He is not a way of life. He is not a memory. He is not experienced in the past or the future. He is not a static-drenched echo from a far off land. He is not once, or at one time. He is not less real now than He was to those who could touch Him. He is not the property of the pietistic, of any denomination or location…He is God with me, God with us, God with them, God with the wicked and twisted and vile, all at once…”

Read the rest here (you really, really want to).

Merry Christmas, friends.

A 25-Day Christmas Countdown That Counts

MoreThanCandyCover (1)

If you’re looking for more than a candy countdown this Christmas, you might like my new eBooklet, More Than Candy – a 25-Day Christmas Countdown that Counts. It’s 25 days of things to do with your family that matter to your neighbors, your local community, your family, and those in need.

I began creating Christmas countdowns years ago after being exposed to them during college. This year, don’t just let the days go by in a flurry, missing an opportunity to serve. Make the days count. I’ll be counting right along with you.

“Jesus stands at the door knocking (Rev. 3:20). In total reality, he comes in the form of the beggar, of the dissoute human child in ragged clothes, asking for help. He confronts you in every person that you meet. As long as there are people, Christ will walk the earth as your neighbor, as the one through whom God calls you, speaks to you, makes demands on you. That is the great seriousness and great blessedness of the Advent message. Christ is standing at the door; he lives in the form of a human being among us. Do you want to close the door or open it?”

-Dietrich Bonhoeffer, God is in the Manger

More Than Candy will be available for purchase as a PDF and on Kindle mid-November, 2013
